A Lighter 打火機！

To give light! To produce light!
To give light to others and help them to see!
Isn’t it meaningful?
A lighter which doesn’t give light is good for nothing: it
has lost its meaning. It may be placed over the table, and
look beautiful: but it deceives people: they think it gives light,
but it doesn’t.
The test of a lighter is not its beauty: it is not its out-side
band of gold: it is its giving light. Many lighters
fail their test.
A lighter that passes its test, is good for many things:
It can light a cigarette, or a cigar or a pipe.
It can bring light in a moment of darkness, in a blackout.
It can give fire to a stove and warm up a cool room.
It can light a candle in the altar and announce there
The presence of the Divine.
Yes, a lighter is a good thing.
And a lighter is a good gift too; full of uses and full of meaning.
As a man, as a person, I may have to be a lighter some times.
Do I pass the test? Can I give light?

◎ 說明一：
袁國柱神父在1981年收到的聖誕賀禮中，有一個打火機。在他寄出的謝函中，神父 寫下這首英文詩歌，歌頌出打火機的給光功能，神父表示這項禮物提醒著他自己， 要做一個能給出光亮的打火機。
“It lights my soul, reminding me that I have to become a lighter.”
袁國柱神父一生，為天主照亮了黑暗的世界，為世界帶來了溫暖，為人類宣告了天 主的臨在。

打火機！A Lighter!

它發出光亮！ 它產生光亮！
它給人們光亮，讓他們能夠看見！
它是有意義的嗎？
不能給光的打火機一無用處，失去意義。
它或許被放在桌上，
燿眼一番，騙人而已。
人們以為它可以給光，而它不能。
測試一個打火機，不是靠外觀漂亮，
不是靠裝飾了一圈金環，
而是靠它是否給光亮，
很多打火機都過不了測試這一關。
一個過了關的打火機有很多的用處：
它可點燃香煙，或雪茄，或煙斗。
它可以瞬間照明黑暗，點亮停電時的漆黑。
它為爐灶生火，為寒屋取暖。
它點燃祭台上的蠟燭
宣告天主的臨在。
真的，打火機真好
也是一項好禮物，好多用處，好有意義。
生為男人，生為人，我有時也得是打火機。
我過了測試這一關嗎？我能給出光亮嗎？

◎ 說明二：
「光」是袁神父生命之歌的主旋律。我認為這也是他何以點燃了「百達之光」。
1997年1月神父送我一張卡片。其中他引了一段聖經：『在他內有生命，這生命是人 的光。光在黑暗中照耀，黑暗絕不能勝過他。』(若望福音1:4-5) 袁神父默默地把光的種籽，植入每個人的心中。
