Remembering Fernando Zallo

I spent with him the last moments of his life. It was a privilege. I
remembered the day I first met him in Zijiahuei, Shanghai, at the end
of March 1949. He was then 22 years old. Tall and handsome.
Knowing that he was coming from the famous town of Guernica I
greeted him with the song “Guernica ko arbola…” One of the few
basques songs I have learned.
When on February 11, 2006, I sat next to him to say in laud voice
the prayers for the dying, he was 80 years old. He has given to the
Taiwan People the best 58 years of his life. He grow-up next to the
castle of St. Francis Xavier and had faithfully followed his steps.
I never have the chance to live with him in the same community.
Yet, all I could see during those days at his side was that he was very
much loved. I witness the constant flow of visitors from Tainan,
Taichong, Hsinchu, Taipei who wanted to see him, to pray and to
cry…
On the occasion of his 50th Anniversary as a Jesuit, Fr. General
thanked him for his long years of service to the Church and to the
Society. In that letter, the General wrote: “Hundreds of young people
have been truly blessed by the seeds of Faith and generosity you
planted in their hearts at the right time and in the right way”. The flow
of visitors before he died was for me a clear confirmation that the
seeds he has planted have bear much fruit. With all of them I say:

格爾尼卡的橡樹

能陪伴他走完人生的旅途，真是莫大的榮幸。猶記得1949年3月底，我在上海徐家匯第一次遇見他。當時他年方22，又高又帥。當我知道他是來自有名的西班牙格爾尼卡鎮時，我不禁以「格爾尼卡的橡樹」這首歌回應他，那是我曾學過的幾首巴斯克語歌曲中的一首。
2006 年2 月11 日，我坐在他的身旁，向著他的垂死之軀大聲祈禱，他已80歲了。他把一生中精華的58年貢獻給台灣人民。他在聖方濟沙勿略堡旁長大成人，並忠實地追隨這位聖人的腳步。
雖然我從來沒有機會和他隸屬同一會院，然而在他身旁的這些日子，我可以全然地見到他是多麼地受人敬愛。我目睹川流不息的訪客，從台南、台中、新竹、台北前來探望他、為他祈禱、為他哭泣。
適值他入耶穌會50週年之際，總會長神父感謝他長年服務教會和耶穌會。在那封信裡，總會長寫道：「在適當的時機以適當的方法，數百位年輕人有幸蒙你將信仰及慷慨的種子，播撒在他們的心田。」在他過世前，對我而言，眾多的訪客清楚地證實他所播下的種子，已孕育成豐碩的果實。
凡此種種，我要說：謝謝國榮，再見了！

顏哲泰神父

顏哲泰神父為耶穌會士，在輔大神學院服務。
李宗文

百達第一屆會友(1967年畢業)， 受百達服務的精神所影響， 大學四年，熱衷參與育幼院服務，開創東吳幼幼社。服兵役前甚至住進育幼院三個月，協助輔導，退伍後曾擔任救國團輔導員、組長，並管過台南學苑、青年館。後轉任屏女、 鳳山商工擔任英文教師，民國91年退休。
